$100 Million Officiating Mistake By NFL Referee?

If you’re a fan of the NFL, you undoubtedly know about the bad call during last weeks game between the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers. But is it true that this was actually a $100 million officiating mistake?

The final play of the game is what is in question. The Steelers were leading 11-10 and San Diego was trying some trickery to score a touchdown. Instead, a Pittsburgh player got the ball and ran it in for a TD. What transpired next was that the officials mistakenly took away the score, thereby reversing what would have been an 18-10 final and keeping it at 11-10. So what is the big deal?

Because of the final score, Pittsburgh did not cover the 4 point spread. Some people have said that because the betting was heavy in favor of Pittsburgh, up to $66 million to $100 million may have been lost in the deal.

Oddsmakers in Las Vegas have denied the reports, and there is no way of knowing for sure, but a figure of $100 million does not sound in the neighborhood at all. Sure, you can believe a lot of money was lost, but it is most likely a number far less than that.

The NFL’s very first 11-10 game ends in much controversy and yet another officiating fiasco. That seems to be the norm for the season. I think that is just as big of a story as the betting woes.
