Denver Broncos Mike Shanahan Fired

With all the usual firings at the conclusion of the NFL season, the one that has now shocked the sports world is the canning of Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. After their historic late season collapse in which they squandered a 3 game lead with 3 to play, I suppose the writing was on the wall. Still, this is a major story.

Owner Pat Bowlen said, “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos.”

Mike Shanahan was the second longest tenured coach in the NFL with 14 years as head coach of the Broncos. Only Jeff Fisher with Tennessee has coached the same team for a longer period.

Shanahan’s final record is 146-91, including the post season. His teams won the Super Bowl twice, both with John Elway as quarterback.

According to Bowlen, this move is the best thing for both parties. Shanahan needs a fresh start and the Broncos do as well. Finding a replacement won’t be an easy task though.

Shanahan has 3 years left on his contract and owed $20 million. Ironically, he was in the process of building a 35,000 sq ft home in a posh Denver area.

No doubt, teams all over the NFL will be calling and inquiring on his availability to coach their teams. The only question is where does Mike Shanahan want to go from here?
