Dr. Seuss Birthday 2009

Today marks a special event. It is Dr. Seuss Birthday 2009. Born, March 2, 1904, Dr. Seuss would have been 105 today.

As the most notable children’s author of our time, Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, MA and attended Dartmouth College.

An interesting story about Dr. Seuss was that he was never an actual doctor. As the story goes, he was caught drinking during the Prohibition period while in college. Part of his punishment for being caught at the time was that he had to end his writing for a school publication.

Because he never wanted to quit writing, he made up a new name of “Dr. Seuss” to fool school administrators into knowing it was him. The plan worked and the name stuck for all these years.

Known for writing all types of rhyming books and his colorful illustrations, Dr. Seuss will be with us for many generations to come. Sadly, he passed away in 1991 at 87 years of age.
