If you have been around for a while then you undoubtedly can recall those wonderful Gilligans Island episodes we grew up with. I can remember coming home from school and watching the castaways every afternoon like it was yesterday. Of all the Gilligans Island characters the Skipper was my favorite. How could you not love this big guy? What’s really nice today is that I can share this great family oriented, clean-cut series with my children through the Gilligans Island DVD series.
This complete set features all 98 Gilligans Island episodes on 9 discs. That’s over 42 hours, and in addition they have included extra features and commentaries from the likes of creator Sherwood Schwartz.
One of these features is the rarely seen pilot episode that was not a part of the regular series and had a different theme song and characters. The pilot featured a different professor, Ginger and Mary Ann.
Here’s a little Gilligans Island trivia for you that few people know. What was Gilligan’s first name? (The answer is below)
There were so many Gilligans Island episodes that I liked, that picking out a favorite would be next to impossible. I enjoyed the one when the phone cable washed ashore and the castaways tried to phone out through it. Another favorite was the one in which they made all types of objects out of clay, but later found out the clay was actually plastic explosives.
The first season remains in its original black and white state, just as CBS filmed it. The reason it was in black and white was because CBS executives didn’t believe the show would be worth spending the extra money on to make it in color. Boy were they wrong! The show became and instant hit and seasons two and three were produced in full color.
The Gilligans Island cast was made with a perfect mix of characters. You couldn’t have asked for a better Mr. and Mrs. Howell. They played off each other perfectly. And the Skipper and Gilligan rivaled the likes of Laurel and Hardy with their antics.
Another thing I liked about the many Gilligans Island episodes was that they could be watched by all age groups. They appealed…and still do…to both young and old alike. Not only that, you can put in a dvd and not have to worry about foul language or nudity.
