When it comes to good April fools jokes, the Taco Liberty Bell joke has to be one of the all-time best. If you don’t remember this joke from 1996, here is how it went down…

Taco Bell decided to join in and play a great prank for April fools day by announcing that it had just purchased the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, PA. They then said that this historic national treasure would be reenamed the Taco Liberty Bell.

Well, you can imagine what happened next. Calls to the National Historic Park in Philadelphia poured in by the thousands. People were outraged that Taco Bell could buy the Liberty Bell.

People were hostile by this “supposed sale”. Finally, several hours later Taco Bell told everyone that it was just a good April fools joke and that they had never bought the Liberty Bell.

Did you know though that the White House joined in on the fun and said that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold that day to Ford? Yep, and it was being renamed the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.
