Great ElephantBird Egg On Sale

A rare Great Elephant Bird egg is on sale at the Chelsea Antiques Fair in London. The giant egg is 13 inches tall and over 3 feet in circumference.

This amazing egg has survived centuries after the bird became extinct in the mid-1600s.

The current owner, John Shepherd, bought the egg a year ago after seeing David Attenborough finding one during a film shoot in Madagascar.

The egg is hollow though. While it once held a baby chick of the Great Elephant Bird of Madagascar, it has been broken and then pieced back together.

It’s interesting to note that this bird did not fly and was the largest bird in history. Similar to the ostrich, it stretched 10 feet tall.

According to Shepherd, a trained palaeontologist, “The egg has a great social history. The Madagascan Elephant Bird was the only giant bird to exist with man and man caused its extinction.”

The egg is expected to fetch a healthy sum at the antiques fair.
