He’s back… Well, it appears that will be the case if Mark McGwire gets his way and becomes a hitting instructor for some major league team in the future.
Although he has steadfastly refused to discuss his “alleged” steroid abuse, he is now interested in returning to the game and helping other hitters. The man who made famous the phrase, “I’m not here to talk about the past”, is now talking to the New York Times.
McGwire said in an interview, one he agreed to only after saying he would not talk about steroid use, that he has been helping several current major league players with their hitting.
Chris Duncan and Skip Schumaker of the St. Louis Cardinals are two of those players that McGwire has been working with. Both players say it has helped their game and appreciate his instructing. Matt Holiday is another player who credits McGwire with help at the plate.
Naturally, critics everywhere have been voicing their opinions on the matter. Some have stated that McGwires hitting tips would be simple and straightforward:
1. Swallow and inject gobs of steroids to bulk up
2. Swing bat hard
3. Slowly trot around bases
4. Cash big paychecks
Others seem to be in support of utilizing him as an instructor. In fact, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa had spoken openly about having him at their 2008 spring training facility to help. La Russa coached McGwire in both Oakland and St. Louis, and has always been a vocal supporter.
So, what do you think of this latest news? Would you welcome McGwire back into the game with open arms? Is this what MLB needs? Or do you feel he needs to just stay quiet and continue living a life outside of baseball?
