The Kellogg Company has issued a peanut butter cracker recall and have asked stores throughout the nation to pull all peanut butter crackers sold under the Austin and Keebler brand names. The action is due to the recent salmonella outbreak that has killed 5 and sickened over 430 more in 43 states.
The Keebler recall is a first for Kellog and although they have not found any problems, the company wanted to take precautionary measures nonetheless.
According to Kellogg CEO David Mackay, “We are taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of caution.”
The recall comes as a result of Peanut Corp of America. They have said that their peanut butter is sold under the names of Parnell’s Pride and King Nut. They also say they distribute it to private label companies and food service industries and institutions.
The FDA is investigating and telling stores to hold onto the Keebler and Austin crackers for now until their testing is conclusive. Kellogg’s says it gets its peanut butter paste for its crackers from several suppliers, but is taking this action anyway as a precaution.
