In the latest sign of the brutal retail conditions, QVC has begun laying off workers at its West Chester, PA headquarters. The QVC layoffs will affect 900 people over the course of the next 14 months. The TV shopping channel said that 3rd quarter revenues forced the company to make drastic changes. They include…
The elimination of 160 jobs immediately
Eliminating 500 more at its distribution center in the nex year
Closing a call center in March 09′ and eliminating the 250 positions held there
Total 3rd quarter revenues for QVC were listed at $1.64 billion, with $1.07 billion being from the U.S. The company says that total revenue is down 3%.
Despite the layoffs and closings, company president and CEO Michael George says that QVC is still “highly profitable.”
The QVC layoffs are only one in the latest of what I am sure are many more to come for other retailers throughout the country. What are your thoughts on this story and current economic conditions? We’d love to hear your comments.

It makes me sad to hear of all the layoffs around the country
I have shopped at QVC since it was CVN. I find myself
being more cautious on ordering items, as I do not know what my money situation will be in the following months.
I feel especially bad for people with children and mortgages
losing their jobs. Hopefully things will brighten..and they
will be called back.
WOW!!I had no idea of the layoffs at my favorite online store!I’We are ALL suffering from the economy I know as a shopper I have had to cut back tremendously even over the holidays.QVC seems to be still selling out on some products and doing well.Let’s hope that this company thinks of all the employees and their families that they may affect before they do more layoffs.Perhaps the upper management could take a cut in pay and show that this is a family company that is not greedy.Let’s reduce prices also in order to get items sold and not ship items seperately when we know items could be shipped in one package to pass savings to the loyal customers.Shipping is a HUGE problems with me!QVC has to change it’s policies when it comes to shipping!!It’s a true crime!this is the other reason I have not been shopping with QVC I try and find FREE shipping when I can.We are ALL trying to save and have to listen to your LOYAL cutomers that have shopped online for many many years!!Thank You!!
It saddens me to hear anyone has to be layed off. I have my favorite hosts and that includes all the hard workers that prepares and ships all the orders. I have been a victim of these hard economic times and have had to sell my house at a loss and move into an apartment after living in my home 16yrs. Seems times just get harder and harder. When is this country going to see a change. My son has been home from Iraq since June 09, has served his country and 55% of the soldiers that came home are still unemployed. President Obama promised they would all have jobs when they returned….NOT!! I wish everyone facing layoffs the best.
I aiso have been hit by the economy….it seems for the same reason that QVC is being hit!!!!! When is enough is enough money????!!!! I can’t believe that they profitted soooo much, but they had a 3% loss…..The sad thing is that the way they figure there profits is that someone somewhere says we should profit X amount this year. Then at the end of the year, just because it is a whole 3% less than they wanted, even though they have profitted billions, they want people to believe they have lost 3%!! What a bunch of hooey!!!! So lets turn people’s lives upside down and make little babies and children lose their safety place…their homes…and maybe have to move far away from their families etc. so when you really get down to the nitty gritty, NAFTA was signed and the government lets these huge companies that are doing so well in such a bad economy and yet they have NO conscience about the people they hurt and may not even be able to feed their families after unemployment has ran out!!! And in the meantime may end up on the streets!!! I love QVC and will probably continue to buy from them. I love the hosts and the products and maybe my purchesses may help someone keep their job. THANKS TO ALL THE BIG GREEDY COMPANIES!!!!
I really feel bad for the people who will be out of a job.
The economic times are really hard and i pray that all will stay positive and be blessed ,
Well I quit buying from them abput April because I had lost my envelope for payment so addressed it to a place on back of statement. I found out it shouldn’t have been sent there, however, because it was, I was 2 days late and the slapped me with a 30$ late fee. I said I have never missed a payment couldn’t I have a grace period just once? NO AND THE PREDIDENT SAYS WE CAN DO THIS. ( Well, btw this in the bank that fiances qvc customers). Maybe if they would get that bank under some control there business would improve. I have several cards and I have made mistakes in the past and they have offered forgiveness. I won’t be doing any more business with the co. and I hate leaving “cracker barrel” name brand. Thank goodness I have what I have.
qvc is our fav channel for disabled shopping….
and so,, we r sad to see folks losing jobs there…….
hope business picks up soon………….
Boy I wish I hadn’t made those typo’s. and it’s not Cracker Barrel. It’s Quacker Factory and they have wonderful beatiful clothes. Jeannie Brice too I believe is getting bad hours but because her clothes are unique they can’t discontinue her. She is unstopable. Maybe she can buy them out, and by the way, I live a distance and enjoyed home shopping, so being disabled isn’t the only reason to be loyal to a company.
