One of Motown’s greateat drummers, Uriel Jones, has passed away at age 74. According to family members, Jones passed away at a hospital in Michigan after suffering complications from a heart attack.
Uriel Jones was the last surviving drummer from the Motown seesion band, the Funk Brothers. He suffered the heart attack in February and was improving before things took a turn for the worse last week.
Playing drums for the Temptations on hits like Cloud Nine and I Can’t Get Next To You, Jones could do it all. He was just as good on softer hits such as Tracks Of My Tears with The Miracles.
He also played with Marvin Gaye and came to Motown in 1964. There he recorded hits like I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Ain’t That Peculiar and the mega-hit, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.
According to Paul Riser, Motown arranger, “Uriel’s drum sound was the most open and laid back and he was the funkiest of the three guys we had. He had a mixed feel and did a lot of different things well.”
Uriel Jones will be remebered for many years to come. There are currently just four members of the Funk Brothers alive today.
